I skipped Capoeira training on wednesday to go to Amsterdam and see Akram Khan's new modern dance piece Vertical Road with a friend. It was a good choice: At first I was concerned this might be a rather 'heavy' piece, but it wears its weighty themes (spirituality, the need for contact and, perhaps, control over others) lightly. The dancing was beautiful and the performance as a whole was powerful and athletic. I read one review that said the piece reminded the reviewer why they devoted so much time to watching dance in the first place - justified praise.
